AI is already embedded in recruitment, performance management and workforce analytics, and HR leaders are increasingly relying on it to speed up decisions that once depended entirely on human judgement. As AI becomes more visible to employees and applicants, opaque outcomes are less likely to be accepted quietly, particularly where they appear to favour some groups over others.
His prescription is pragmatic rather than anti-technology. HR teams should first identify where AI is influencing decisions, then set clear rules on when human sign-off is required and who owns the outcome. They should review results by looking across groups rather than isolated cases, and fold oversight into existing recruitment, performance and pay processes. The central point, he argues, is that AI can inform decisions, but should not be allowed to replace accountability. Left unchecked, organisations do not just automate work; they can also automate the consequences of their own past bias.
