Police in Bhubaneswar have rescued a man and apprehended four suspects involved in a kidnapping-for-ransom linked to a financial dispute, highlighting the city’s ongoing fight against organised crime.

Police in Bhubaneswar have broken up a kidnapping-for-ransom plot near Master Canteen railway station, rescuing a young man and arresting four suspects after an early-morning abduction triggered a swift search operation, according to local police. The case began on 11 April when the victim and a companion had just booked a cab near Master Canteen Square, only for a car to pull up and a group of men to seize him and drive away.

Investigators said the abductors then switched phone numbers and demanded ₹15 lakh for the victim’s release, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid. Police tracked the victim’s mobile signal, located the suspected vehicle near the Jatni Gate area and freed him safely from inside it. Four people at the scene were arrested, while one alleged associate escaped, and officers later seized the vehicle and four mobile phones. The Times of India reported that the kidnapping was linked to a financial dispute involving a ₹12 lakh loan, suggesting a business or money-related motive behind the crime.

The accused were identified by police as Asish Kumar Nayak, Chinmaya Kumar Behera, Pranab Kumar Behera and Dipak Kumar Sahoo. Officers said the group confessed during questioning, and records showed that Ashish had previously faced cases in Nayapalli, Bharatpur and Bhawanipatna Town, while Dipak had a prior case in Chandanpur. The four have been forwarded to court as the hunt continues for the remaining suspect.
